Harvest Knife
T
he Tucson gardener who grows vegetables will want to have a good knife within easy reach when it comes time to harvest some of the vegetable crops. It's great for cutting roots from lettuce, slicing squash or broccoli from the stem, and cutting Swiss chard stalks. I use mine to chop up some of the green material I've  tossed in the compost bin.

I keep my harvesting knife in the greenhouse where it's just a couple of steps from the vegetable beds. I've added red cloth tape to the handle to make it a bit more visible in case I happen to set it down somewhere and then can't remember where. The red tape makes it more visible so it's not as apt to get lost in the garden. A splash of bright colored paint could also be used on the handle to aide in visibility.

I purchased my two harvesting knifes from The Cook's Garden for about $12 each, not including the shipping and handling. I also noticed Harris Seeds sells two different blade shaped harvest knifes for $12.50, not including shipping and handling, and they both come with a leather sheath. You might want to pay the little bit extra for the protective sheath. Harris sells one as a broccoli knife and the other as a lettuce knife. All of the knifes have beech wood handles and seven inch blades. Overall length of the harvesting knives is about one foot.

The long blade and large handle makes it easy to remove mature broccoli heads from the plant.

A good, strong knife has many uses in the vegetable garden whether it's for harvesting crops, opening a bag of potting soil or cutting string. The large size makes it easy to handle and less likely to get lost. You might want to add a harvest knife to your often used collection of garden tools.
