Flexible Bucket
s
ome sort of container for carrying garden waste, potting soil, fertilizer or water is always needed in the garden. I've used plastic trash cans and recycled five gallon buckets in the past. I still use them for some garden projects or clean up.  One winter while perusing a catalog I spotted black recycled buckets. What intrigued me was their purported flexibility and that they were available in three different sizes. I ordered the smallest of the three which stood about 11 inches in height and had a 14-inch diameter.

Upon its arrival I noticed it wasn't the prettiest bucket in the garden but it had solid handles and the recycled plastic was pliable. The flexibility made it useful for watering. I could fill up the container and add water soluble fertilizer.

Made from recycled material these flexible buckets have lots of different uses in the garden.

Flexible buckets for the garden.

Frost damaged lemons  can find their way to the recycle bin with the help of a flexible bucket.

Winter damaged lemons will get moved to the compost bin.

Large containers can be easily watered with the help of a flexible container.

6.6 gallon bucket is good for watering and ferilizing container plants.

Watering cans can be slow to empty their content where the flexible bucket was a quick way to disperse a lot of water, especially for large pots. I also found the small container carried enough water that I could use it to fill the concrete dishes I use to supply water for the local wildlife.

I eventually added the midsize bucket to my gardening tool collection. It was a couple inches taller than the original and about three inches wider. It was useful for mixing potting soil and filling containers with the soil. The largest size, with its 21-inch diameter might be a bit difficult to handle. The smallest is the most convenient for mixing water soluble fertilizer and watering.

I purchased on-line from Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply. Prices were $9.95 for the small 14-inch diameter, $14.95 for the medium 17-inch and $19.95 for the large 21-inch diameter. A discount was given if you purchased more than one of the buckets. You'll have to add shipping and handling to the cost.

I've found the buckets very useful and durable and hope to have them around for a long time to come. (2006)
