Garden Catalogs
If you're a gardener and sent away for a catalog or two there's no doubt over time the number of garden related catalogs ending up in your mailbox has grown. December and January are the prime time for the seed catalogs although some companies specializing in garden related products send their catalogs throughout the year.

Unless you're looking for a specialty item or specific variety of plant seed I'd shop locally first. By the time you tack on postage and handling you won't get too many bargains. But then the catalogs, besides offering variety, offer convenience when you get the product delivered to your mailbox or front door. And the selection is always greater than what you'll find on local seed racks.

You might find that there are some catalogs you can't do without. Especially the specialty ones like The Cook's Garden with its vast selection of lettuce seed. Or maybe you like the Gardener's Supply Company and their assortment of garden related products. Then there's the chance Burpee or Park seed has the one variety of tomato or marigold that you just have to have in your garden every year.

For the growing number of web shoppers most of the seed and garden companies now offer their products and information over the Internet. You can browse their on-line catalogs and place your order while sitting at your computer.

The gardeners in cold climates look forward to their picture filled catalogs in the dead of winter when their soil is frozen solid. For them it's a chance to plan and look ahead to spring.

Tucson gardeners don't have to worry about getting through the dark cold months of winter. Some vegetables and flowers are growing in our gardens and there's no reason to rush spring which is quickly followed by our harsh summers. If you're lucky you might stumble on a freshly stocked rack of seed packs in January at your nursery or garden center. If you do, forget the seed catalogs and stock up while you still have a good selection. (1998)
